CASUAL VS FORMAL

Decide whether you want a formal or casual feel to your family portrait.  Your choice should reflect the attitude of your family. If your family is of a relaxed nature, casual clothing is a better choice so that everyone is relaxed and comfortable during the photo session.

COMPLIMENTING OUTFITS FOR COLOR HARMONY

Having an overall complimentary look makes your family portrait more aesthetically pleasing.  While completely matching is not necessary, picking a color scheme gives your portrait a more cohesive appearance.  You may wish to have everyone in the portrait wear different outfits incorporating the same color(s).  You can also have everyone in the family wear different outfits incorporating colors that create color harmony.  You can can pick any of the color schemes on the following website to achieve color harmony:  http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-harmonies.htm.  If your family style leans more towards neutrals, try the traditional black and/or white with tans, blues or grays. You may even pick one bolder color to incorporate in small quantity (accessorize) to add “pops of color” to the neutral tones in your family portrait.

Don’t forget to take into consideration colors that will be present in the background of your photo shoot location. Also, remember you don’t want your family portrait screaming that you are all identical! Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun and capture your family’s personality!
